Dr. Sarina Ma
After graduating with her PhD from Prof. Shuler’s research group in 2004, Sarina has held several R&D positions in pharmaceutical drug product formulation and process development at Alza Corporation, Exelixis, XenoPort and most recently at Gilead Sciences since 2013. She has had the opportunity to work on several interesting products, including remdesivir (Veklury®) in 2020, the first antiviral approved by the FDA for treatment of COVID-19. Outside of work, Sarina enjoys playing beach volleyball, hiking, paddle boarding, cooking, and relaxing with her husband (Paul Ma, also a CBE graduate from the Engstrom group) and two kids (Hayden and Ellie). Sarina and her family fairly recently had the adventure of relocating from the Bay Area to greater Phoenix, where they endured 53 days over 110 °C in 2020, but also have really enjoy exploring all the natural wonders the state has to offer.
